5 Upcoming Diverse Rom-Coms Dropping in 2021

Book Riot is a web resource for readers and authors alike that has become just phenomenal and essential since its inception in 2011. Champions for diversity in literature and all the wonderful representation that includes, I often get a lot of my reads from their articles. Earlier this month, Namera Tanjeem at BR (clickable link her to bio!) recommended 9 Diverse Romantic Comedies that are certain to put a smile on our faces. I've added them all to my TBR, but here are the five I'm most looking forward to! Be warned, some of these aren’t out for another couple of months, but you can find the remaining four quickly through Namera's article by clicking here.

Pumpkin (Julie Murphy) - I honestly had no idea that Dumplin' was the first of a series. I swear I'm not living under a rock. *drunk emoji* It won’t be available for purchase until May, but deserves a one-click preorder, so go on!

Prom Theory (Ann LaBar) - Sadly, this one won't be out for another few weeks. But when I found out that the protagonist Iris, who is non-verbal, is committing to getting her crush to ask her to prom through love science, I decided it absolutely will be worth the wait.

Neanderthal Seeks Human (Penny Reid) - I first heard about Penny Reid's work on Book Riot's blog, When In Romance (podcast worth adding to your library, I promise!). "Smart Romance" is her tagline, and she is not even playing. This book follows Janie, a neurodiverse knitter who is legitimately worth her weight in gold, and that's just going off the synopsis. I really can't wait to tuck into this one.

Sunny Song Will Never Be Famous (Suzanne Park) - Not only am I charmed by books with long titles, but it's important that we all know and understand that most of us have been Sunny Song at one point or another.

Dial A for Aunties (Jesse Q. Sutanto) - The title resonates because I, too, am an Auntie! However, once I looked the book up and read the synopsis, I was sold. I'm gonna leave it at that, because you need to experience it for yourself!

Samantha Anne

Samantha Anne is the author of Kirby and Company Ink (nominated for a 2014 Rone Award and a 2016 Rone Award Finalist, respectively) and has been writing Contemporary Romance since 2013. She grew up writing fan fiction for her friends (dubbed ‘Daydreams’) and their first book boyfriends, as a result, included the likes of Joey McIntyre, Kevin Richardson, and JC Chasez.

Her writing style was built on a healthy diet of Anne Rice, Nora Ephron, Amy Heckerling, Garry Marshall twisted with the comedic stylings of Mel Brooks and National Lampoon set to the tune of The Ramones, David Bowie, Bon Jovi, and Joan Jett, and it often shows in her work.

When she’s not writing about flawed heroines and their charming love interests, Samantha loves playing bass, baking, feeding her friends, podcasting, singing and drowning in Disney movies and 80’s/90’s pop culture.
